Welcome to the CEFCThe French Centre for Research on Contemporary China (CEFC) is a publicly funded research institute, part of the network of the abroad supported by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the CNRS.
The CEFC’s mission is to explore the political, economic, social and cultural developments in the contemporary Chinese world (China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao, etc.). The CEFC organises frequent seminars and conferences. It also publishes a quarterly, China Perspectives, and its French edition, Perspectives chinoises. These two journals are entirely devoted to the contemporary Chinese world on which they provide analysis encompassing socio-political, economic, cultural and literary aspects. China Perspectives/Perspectives chinoises is an academic journal based on anonymous peer review. Its editorial board is made up of scholars from renowned international institutions. Contributions typically present first-hand research on developments in the field, while contextualizing it within the larger intellectual trends that shape the undestanding of China today. As of 1 September 2011, eight researchers, three PhD candidates, nine associate researchers and five administrative employees currently work at the CEFC. Since its establishment in 1991, the Centre has been based in Hong Kong. In 1994, a branch office was also set up in Taipei on the campus of the Academica Sinica (in Nankang). The CEFC has built close working ties with universities in greater China and with leading research centers on contemporary China all over the world.
A scientific board, composed of academics, convenes in Paris every year to determine the CEFC's scientific policy. The CEFC was founded by Michel Bonnin, who became its first director (1991-1998), followed by Jean-Pierre Cabestan (1998-2003) and, Gilles Guiheux (2003-2006) and, Jean-François Huchet (2006-2011).
