ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM:
The “Rape of Nanking” took place 73 years ago in 1937 when Japanese soldiers looted the occupied city and raped and massacred civilians. In the streets of Tokyo, young citizens are ignorant about this event and at the Yasukuni shrine, imperial military culture still prevails. Two ground-breaking documentary films steer clear of the nationalist rhetoric and instead, probe into Japanese memories of violence and the culture of the sword. In this mini-symposium, documentary film producer and director join the humanities scholars to discuss post-atrocity memories, Nanking, and the power of documentary film.
