Summary :
Since the Chinese government under Deng Xiaoping introduced economic reforms in 1978, China has undergone meteoric economic growth, privatisation, industrialisation and urbanisation, which have profoundly reshaped interpersonal relationships and local distributions of power.
Through her case study of entrepreneurs in Henan, Taiqian (台前县), Camille Boullenois examines how one could become an entrepreneur and how at different stages since the 1980s, and she analyses the consequences of social mobility in terms of personal experience, ideology, sense of identity, and social relationships.
